A new study shows that taking Viagra can help boost the effects of erectile dysfunction in men.
Researchers from University College London studied the effect of a drug called sildenafil, which helps increase blood flow to the penis. Sildenafil was given to men at high risk of suffering from erectile dysfunction by the NHS. Men taking sildenafil had a fivefold greater incidence of erectile dysfunction than men on a lower dose.
“This study is a first-to-market report, and the results suggest that sildenafil can be used to treat erectile dysfunction in men,” said the study’s senior author, Dr Paul R. Dolin, an associate professor of urology and chief executive officer of the University’s Sexual Medicine and Hypertension Section. “Sildenafil is now available over-the-counter in some countries.
“This makes it a convenient treatment option for men who have erectile dysfunction, particularly when they are younger.”
The findings of this study appear in the British Medical Journal, which will be published online April 16.
A previous study found that men taking a similar dose of Viagra were less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction than men taking a lower dose. The results were in line with those from the University of Manchester study, which found that men taking a similar dose of Viagra were less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction than men on a lower dose.
The study’s lead author, Dr Chris Gershan, a professor of urology and president of the UK-based Viagra Association, said: “We have had a lot of interest in this area of research and the results suggest that taking sildenafil can help improve erectile function.
“The results from this study suggest that sildenafil is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction.”
Dr Gershan added: “We are currently investigating this use of sildenafil as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Our study is a preliminary one, and further research is required to determine if this drug is more effective than the lower dose.”The study is published in the journalJAMA Urology.
The study involved about 400 men with erectile dysfunction.
It was conducted on men who had been taking sildenafil for more than 3 years. Sildenafil was available in a lower dose and was taken only by men aged 18 to 65 years.
The research is published in the British Medical Journal. The trial was funded by the Department of Health and Care, the National Institute for Health Research and the National Institute of Clinical Excellence.
It is not clear what effect the results of this study would have on Viagra users.
A study published in theJournal of Sexual Medicinein May said: “The results of this study suggest that taking sildenafil can help improve erectile function.
“The study was conducted in men with erectile dysfunction and was designed to be sensitive to the effects of the drug.”
